How to Take a Passport Photo with your iPhone

You don't need a professional photographer to get a compliant digital passport photo. Modern smartphones are more than capable—if you follow these 5 crucial steps.

The Golden Rule: Do NOT Use Selfie Mode

Selfie cameras distort your facial features (making your nose look larger and ears smaller) due to their wide-angle lenses. Government software will reject distorted photos. Always use the rear-facing camera and have a friend take the picture, or use a tripod with a timer.

Step 1: Find the Perfect Lighting

Lighting is the #1 reason DIY passport photos are rejected. You must avoid shadows on your face and on the background behind you.

  • Use Natural Light: Stand facing a large window during the daytime. The light should hit your face evenly.
  • Avoid Overhead Lights: Turn off ceiling lights directly above you, as they cast dark shadows under your eyes and nose.
  • No Flash: Turn the iPhone flash off. Flash creates harsh glare on your skin and aggressive drop-shadows on the wall.

Step 2: Position Yourself Correctly

Stand about 1 to 2 feet away from a wall. Standing too close to the wall will create a drop shadow behind your head.

Pro Tip: Don't worry if your wall isn't perfectly white. Our free AI tool will automatically remove your living room background and replace it with pure, compliant white.

Step 3: iPhone Camera Settings

Hand the phone to a friend and have them stand about 4 to 5 feet away from you.

  1. Open the Camera app.
  2. Ensure you are in standard "Photo" mode (do NOT use Portrait mode, as the blurred background will get your photo rejected).
  3. Tap the 2x or 3x optical zoom button at the bottom of the screen. Zooming in optically from a distance flattens the image and prevents facial distortion.
  4. Tap on your face on the screen to ensure the camera focuses and exposes for your skin tone.

Step 4: The Pose

  • Look directly into the camera lens (not at the screen).
  • Keep a neutral facial expression with your mouth closed.
  • Ensure your head is perfectly straight—not tilted up, down, or to the side.
  • Make sure both of your ears are visible (tuck your hair back).
  • Take off your glasses! (Glasses are no longer permitted).

Step 5: Format the Digital Photo

Once you have a good raw photo, do not try to manually crop it in the Photos app. Government requirements dictate that your head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (between 50% and 69% of the image's total height). This is incredibly difficult to do manually.

Instead, upload your photo to our tool. The AI will instantly detect your face, crop it to the exact millimeter, and generate a print-ready file.
