Compliance + Auto-Fix

Free Passport Photo Compliance Checker 2026

The UK and Canada government checkers tell you what failed. They don't fix anything. This one checks the same compliance rules β€” head size, background, eye alignment, exposure β€” and automatically fixes everything fixable, so you walk away with a passing file instead of a list of problems.

What official checkers verify

Six things, every time, in every country's checker. The free tool runs all six and flags specific issues:

  • Head size. Chin to crown must fall in the country's exact range β€” 1 to 1β…œ inches in the US, 29–34 mm in the UK.
  • Head position. Face centered horizontally, eyes on the right line vertically, no tilt.
  • Background. Solid color (white for US, light grey for UK), no shadows, no pattern, no objects.
  • Eye state. Both eyes fully open, looking at the camera, no glasses, no reflections.
  • Expression. Neutral or natural β€” mouth closed, no exaggerated smile, no frown.
  • Exposure. Face evenly lit, no harsh shadows from overhead light, no blown highlights from a flash, no extreme color cast.

Why most photos fail (real rejection data)

From State Department, IRCC, and HM Passport Office published rejection data, the most common reasons in 2026 are:

  • ~35% β€” head sized wrong in the frame. Most often too small. People take the photo from too far away.
  • ~22% β€” background not compliant. Off-white walls, slight color cast, shadows behind the head from a lamp.
  • ~12% β€” overhead shadows on the face. Indoor ceiling lights cast harsh shadows under the eyes and nose.
  • ~9% β€” glasses reflections or eyes not visible. The US, UK, and Schengen all banned glasses for this reason.
  • ~8% β€” head tilt or not centered. Off by 5Β° or more.
  • ~6% β€” hair covering features. Especially eyebrows or ears (where ears are required).
  • ~5% β€” wrong file size or DPI for digital uploads. Mostly DS-160 240 KB cap and HEIC-not-JPEG.
  • ~3% β€” expression problems. Smile too wide, mouth open, frowning.

All eight categories are detectable by the automated checker β€” and the first six are fixable in one step.

Use our free tool β€” automatic compliance + format

How the four-step flow works:

  1. Upload. Drag in any smartphone photo. JPEG, PNG, or HEIC all work β€” HEIC is converted automatically.
  2. Pick country and document. Pick from 200+ document specs (US passport, UK passport, Schengen visa, India OCI, etc.). The tool loads the correct ruleset.
  3. Auto-check and auto-fix. AI runs the six compliance checks. Any issue that can be fixed (background, head centering, sizing, color cast) is fixed in one click. Issues that can't be fixed automatically (eyes closed, harsh facial shadows) are flagged so you can re-shoot.
  4. Download. Get the single 2Γ—2 (or country-spec) file plus a 4Γ—6 print layout. Print at home or upload to Walmart Photo for $0.16.

Manual checklist if you want to self-verify

If you want to verify a photo yourself before uploading anywhere, run this checklist. It mirrors what every official checker does:

  • Hold a ruler up to the printed photo. Chin to crown should be 1 to 1β…œ inches (US) or in your country's spec range.
  • Look at the photo at arm's length. Is the background a solid color? Any shadows visible? Any objects?
  • Cover everything except the eyes. Are both eyes fully visible, fully open, looking forward? Any glare?
  • Look at the mouth and expression. Neutral or very small natural smile? Mouth closed?
  • Check shadows on the face. Run a finger across the cheek and forehead in the photo. Any dark patches indicate overhead light shadows β€” re-shoot.
  • Check head tilt. Hold a ruler vertically next to the photo. The line through both eyes should be horizontal.
  • For digital uploads, check file size and format. JPEG. Under the country's cap (240 KB for US DS-160 visa).

After checking β€” print or upload digital

Once your photo passes the compliance check, two options:

  • Print at home or pharmacy. Download the 4Γ—6 print template with two photos pre-arranged on a single 4Γ—6 layout. Print at Walmart for $0.16, CVS or Walgreens for $0.39. See the full cost comparison.
  • Upload digitally. Most online application portals (DS-160, GOV.UK, ETIAS, IRCC) accept the JPEG file directly. The checker output is sized correctly for each portal.
  • Both. Take the printed photo to your in-person appointment plus the digital file for the online application β€” same photo, both places.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an official passport photo checker verify?

Government and quality online checkers verify the same six things: (1) head size β€” chin to crown is in the correct range for the country, (2) head position β€” face is centered, eyes on the correct horizontal line, (3) background β€” solid color, no shadows or pattern, (4) eye state β€” both eyes open and looking at the camera, (5) expression β€” neutral, mouth closed, (6) exposure β€” face evenly lit, no harsh shadows or blown highlights. The strictest checkers (UK gov, Canada IRCC) also flag glasses reflections, head tilt, and head coverings.

Why do most passport photos fail compliance checks?

Across all official rejection data, the top six failure reasons in 2026 are: (1) head too small or too large in the frame β€” about 35% of rejections, (2) background not pure white or has shadows β€” 22%, (3) shadows on the face from overhead light β€” 12%, (4) glasses reflections or eyes not visible β€” 9%, (5) head tilted or not centered β€” 8%, (6) hair covering eyes, ears, or eyebrows β€” 6%. The remaining 8% covers expression issues, head coverings, and image quality problems.

How is your free checker different from the UK gov or Canada gov checkers?

The official UK and Canada government checkers verify compliance but won't fix anything for you β€” they tell you the photo failed and you start over. Our free tool runs the same compliance checks plus automatically fixes everything fixable: it removes the background and replaces it with white, centers the head, sizes it correctly, and exports a print-ready 4Γ—6 layout. You go from "this fails" to "here is the file that passes" in one step.

Is your passport photo checker really free?

Yes, fully free. No watermarks, no sign-up, no paywalled export. The image processing runs in your browser using on-device AI β€” your photo never leaves your device. Some competing tools charge $10–$15 per export. We don't. The site is funded by affiliate links to pharmacy printing services that you choose to use after formatting, not by the tool itself.

Can your checker tell me why a photo will be rejected?

Yes. The checker flags specific issues: head size out of range, background not compliant, shadows detected, eyes not aligned, head tilt detected. Each flag includes the exact issue and how to fix it β€” often the tool can fix it automatically (background, head centering, sizing) and you just confirm.

What countries does the checker support?

The checker has built-in specs for 200+ countries and document types β€” US passport, US visa (DS-160), UK passport, Schengen visa, Canada passport, India passport and OCI, China, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and the full EU. Each country's exact head-size, background, and dimension rules are encoded. Pick the country and document at upload β€” the checker applies the correct ruleset automatically.
