Free Japanese Passport Photo Maker

A Japanese passport photo is 35×45 mm — the international ICAO biometric size. Important: this is DIFFERENT from the Japanese visa photo, which is 45×45 mm square. Don't mix them up. Japanese passport renewal at any prefecture passport center uses the 35×45 mm format.

Japanese passports adopted the international ICAO 35×45 mm rectangular standard in 2006 to align with global biometric travel documents. Japanese visa photos retained the historical 45×45 mm square format used by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. So Japanese citizens use 35×45 mm; foreign nationals applying for Japanese visas use 45×45 mm.

Plain white only. Japanese passport centers reject light grey, off-white, or any color cast. The white must be uniform with no patterns, textures, or shadows. Japan is more strict than most countries on background uniformity.

Within the last 6 months. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs checks for recent likeness — outdated photos are rejected at the prefecture passport center.

In Japan: 証明写真機 (shōmei shashinki) photo booths at every train station, konbini, and shopping mall take Japan-spec photos for ¥800–1,500. They print 35×45 mm or 45×45 mm depending on which preset you choose — pick the right one. Outside Japan: format the 35×45 mm spec yourself, print at a local photo lab.

No smiling — Japan requires a strictly neutral expression with mouth closed. Glasses are technically allowed but discouraged due to glare and frame interference; most applicants remove them. Sunglasses or tinted lenses are never accepted.
