Making a passport photo from an iPhone shot?

You don't need to convert first — the free passport photo editor accepts HEIC directly, converts it on-device, then crops to your country's exact size, removes the background, and builds a print-ready 4×6 sheet. This standalone converter is for when you just need plain JPGs — for a government upload form, a print kiosk, or e-mail.

HEIC to JPG — FAQ

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

Since iOS 11, iPhones default to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) because it stores the same quality as JPEG in roughly half the space. That is great for your storage, but most government portals, print kiosks, and older software only accept JPEG or PNG — so HEIC files get rejected with "unsupported file type" errors.

Is the conversion really done on my device?

Yes. The converter runs a WebAssembly build of a HEIC decoder inside your browser tab. Your photo is never uploaded anywhere — you can even switch to airplane mode after the page loads and it still works.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

The conversion re-encodes at 92% JPEG quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for photos. File size typically grows somewhat, because JPEG is a less efficient format than HEIC.

How do I stop my iPhone from shooting HEIC in the first place?

Settings → Camera → Formats → choose "Most Compatible". Your iPhone will then capture JPEG directly. Alternatively, leave HEIC on (it saves space) and convert only when a form demands JPEG.

Can I make a passport photo straight from a HEIC file?

Yes — our passport photo editor accepts HEIC uploads directly and converts them automatically before cropping, background removal, and export. If that is your end goal, skip this tool and start in the editor.
