Passport Photo Size Guide — All Countries 2026

Passport photo dimensions are not standardized worldwide. The US uses 2×2 inches, the UK uses 35×45 mm, Canada uses 50×70 mm — and a photo printed for one usually won't pass for another. This is the spec reference, plus links to country-specific tool pages for instant formatting.

DPI, file size, and paper type rules

  • Print DPI: 300 DPI is universal. At 2×2 inches, that means 600×600 pixels minimum. UK 35×45 mm at 300 DPI is 413×531 pixels.
  • Print paper: photo-quality glossy or matte. Plain office paper fails — pigments bleed and the surface looks dull. Use 4×6 photo paper for home printing or order 4×6 prints from any pharmacy.
  • Digital file format: JPEG is universal. Some governments accept PNG; very few accept HEIC (the iPhone default). Convert HEIC to JPEG before any government upload.
  • Digital file size limits: US DS-160 caps at 240 KB; UK at 50 KB to 10 MB; Schengen ETIAS around 100 KB to 10 MB. The free editor can compress to any of these.
  • Color profile: sRGB. Adobe RGB and other profiles cause color shifts that look like background-color violations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard US passport photo size?

The US passport photo size is 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), printed at 300 DPI on photo-quality paper. The face from chin to crown should measure 1 to 1⅜ inches in the printed image, with the top of the head between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom of the photo. The same size is used for US visas, green cards, and most US government IDs.

Is UK passport photo size the same as Schengen?

Yes — both the UK and the entire Schengen Area use 35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm) photos. The face must measure 29–34 mm from chin to crown, which is 32–36 mm of total head height. The UK also accepts a digital-only upload of 600×750 px minimum for online passport applications. EU member states standardized on 35×45 mm in the 2000s.

Why is Canada's passport photo size different from the US?

Canada uses 50×70 mm (5×7 cm), a portrait orientation that's wider and taller than the US 2×2 square. The face from chin to crown must be 31–36 mm. Canada also requires a stamp on the back of one printed photo with the photographer's name, address, and the date taken — a unique requirement among major countries that you should plan for if printing at home.

What size is an Indian passport photo?

India uses 35×45 mm — the same dimensions as the UK and Schengen — for passport, OCI, and most visa applications. Some Indian government documents (PAN card, Aadhaar) accept 25×35 mm or 30×40 mm. The face should fill 70–80% of the frame, with both ears visible and a plain white background. Make sure to verify the specific document — sizes are not interchangeable.

What DPI and file size do passport photos require?

For printed photos, 300 DPI is the universal standard — anything lower softens the image at 2×2 inch print sizes. For digital uploads, requirements vary: US DS-160 visa photos must be JPEG between 240×240 and 1200×1200 pixels and under 240 KB; UK online uploads must be JPEG between 50 KB and 10 MB at minimum 600×750 pixels; Schengen ETIAS uploads accept similar specs. Always check the specific government portal for current limits.

Can I use a single photo for multiple countries?

Sometimes. If your countries share dimensions — UK, Schengen, and India all use 35×45 mm — one print is reusable. The US 2×2 inch print works for any 2×2 country (US passport, US visa, Mexico, Philippines). Canada's unique 50×70 mm size requires a separate print. The free editor can export multiple sizes from one source photo without re-uploading.

What's the easiest way to print a country-specific passport photo at home?

Use a free online formatter to size the image to the country spec, then print on a 4×6 inch glossy photo paper sheet — 4×6 is the universal photo-paper size at every pharmacy and home printer. Two 2×2 photos fit on one 4×6 with room to spare. For 35×45 mm photos, six fit on a 4×6. Cut along the marked lines for individual prints. Total cost: $0.16 at Walmart Photo, or about $0.40 if printing at home with your own paper.
